March 2011 Newsletter

Womens Health Clinic Newsletter

Welcome to the third edition of our newsletter. We aim to regularly bring to your attention any new developments in the clinic and highlight various aspects of womens health which may be of interest to you. We hope you find this helpful and informative

Mirena Coil

Do you need very reliable long term reversible contraception that will also control heavy periods? The Mirena intrauterine system is a coil coated with progesterone which is easily inserted at the Womens Health Clinic by Dr Rachel Mackey. It lasts for 5 years and releases a very small amount of hormone daily. It is also very useful in controlling heavy periods. It is suitable for almost all women, including those who have not had children. Its effects are completely reversible within days of removal.

Full GP Service

Did you know that we provide a full range of GP services for women and children at the Womens Health Clinic? Dr Gillian McLaughlin is our GP on staff and has a wide range of interests. She is in charge of childhood vaccinations and has a special interest in chronic medical conditions and sports injuries. The Womens Health Clinic is happy to see our patients with all acute and chronic illnesses, not just womens health issues.

Exercise and Womens Health

Everyone knows that exercise is good for you in general, but did you know that it has been shown to be very useful in improving many medical conditions?

  • Exercise, in conjunction with a low Glycemic Index (GI) diet is known to improve symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS).
  • Painful periods can be lessened with exercise because of the release of natural painkillers called endorphins.
  • Depressive symptoms are known to improve when regular exercise is introduced
  • Cholesterol levels are lowered when used in conjunction with a low fat diet – 30 minutes on most days is recommended.
New Fertility Service

We are delighted to announce the introduction of ovulation induction at the Womens Health Clinic.

We have always provided an investigative service for women with fertility issues, with blood tests on site, and sperm count and ultrasound arranged. We can now offer ovulation induction with clomiphene citrate (Clomid) for women who are not ovulating naturally. This is done in association with Ultrasound Dimensions in Blackrock.
