Womens Health Clinic Newsletter

Welcome to the second edition of our newsletter. We will regularly bring to your attention any new developments in the clinic and highlight various aspects of women’s health which may be of interest to you. We hope you find this helpful and informative.

Free Cervical Smears

The good news for Irish women is that you can now have a free smear done at the Womens Health Clinic if you are aged between 25 and 60. Until recently women had to apply for their free smear but now you can just request a smear at your next visit, free of charge.

Obesity and Fertility

As you may know infertility affects 1 in 6 couples in Ireland, but did you know that obesity can significantly reduce fertility in women. A Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or greater puts women at increased risk of not ovulating and also lowers success rates for infertility treatments. Weight loss of as little as 5% of total weight can be enough to restore ovulation and achieve pregnancy.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) which is currently present in approximately 1 in 15 of women aged under 25 in Ireland. Very few women (less than 20%) will display any symptoms. If left untreated Chlamydia can lead to infertility. It is detected easily by a vaginal swab or urine sample and can be treated effectively with a course of antibiotics. Ask your doctor about it at your next visit.

Breast Awareness

October was Breast Awareness Month, a timely reminder for everyone to think about their own breast care. Here is a quick and easy guide on how to be breast aware:

  • Know what is normal for you
  • Know what changes to look for
  • Look and feel
  • Discuss any changes with your GP without delay
  • Attend for routine breast screening if you are aged between 50 and 64

It is important that every woman is breast aware. This means knowing what is normal for you so that if any unusual change occurs you will recognise it.
